Pro Tips on how to become a 'Conscious Traveler'
Conscious travel is about about human rights and sustaining communities, and not just about sustainability and environmentalism. Travel mindfully and take into consideration the impact of your trip on both the environment and the society. With our simple tips below and the following quote in mind - you will go a long way!
I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything; but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.
- Edward Everett Hale
TRANSPORT
Before booking flight tickets, explore all different options of getting to your destination. Maybe make the journey part of the destination by taking the scenic route and explore part of the distance by boat, bus, or train? Also take in to consideration to travel less often to fewer destinations, but stay for a longer time when traveling to a destination far away. Sometimes flying might be the only option, and try to keep in mind that fuel is for the most part emitted during start and landing, which means you can make up for some of the emissions by booking direct flights whenever possible. This is not only better for the environment, but will also save you time!
DITCH THE PLASTIC
Never bring more plastic or package than necessary with you on your trips. Avoid packing in plastic bags that you might leave behind. Use reusable bottles for your shampoo, conditioner etc, and bring them home with you again. Bring a water bottle and request filtered water refills from the hotel/restaurants. Make the shift from single-use, disposable wipes and cotton pads to more sustainable alternatives - such as reusable rounds! ⠀
Travel with a convenient beach bag and reject all single use plastic when doing your shopping. Say no thank you to all plastic straws, when ordering drinks and cocktails. Make a statement so the resorts you are staying with gets the message and hopefully act more sustainable in the future.
SUPPORT THE LOCALS
Instead of going by car everywhere choose to be more adventures and try the local transport (depending on what destinations - check before, if safe to do so!). Explore local food markets and try new flavours. Speak with the locals and hear their stories - maybe you can learn things from each other or just have a great laugh together?
BUT CHOOSE SOUVENIRS WISELY
Don’t buy things you don’t need! To help the planet we need to buy less. Look out for authentic souvenirs that will last for a long time. The best souvenir is something you can continue to use when back home again.
BE CONSIOUS BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER YOUR TRAVEL
The following advices are easy, and everyone should already be doing this. Don’t ask the hotel to wash you towels and linen every day. Don’t use single plastic toiletries if provided, instead, bring you own refillable bottles. Act as you where at home, would you leave all the lights on at home? No, so turn of the lights when not in your room.
During you stay - challenge the hotel you are staying at by asking questions about their actions of being more sustainable. The more people who demand change, the greener the hospitality business will become.
